Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Travel to USA? My parents are travelling to USA in feb, 2008. I just want to know whether travel insurance is mandatory for international travellers coming to USA on family visits? If yes, may i have some insurance plans from reputable companies (at lower cost) which have good customer reviews? I heard that "Travelers Liberty" plan is quite cheap and good for short trip, but don't know about the reputation and claim settlement efficiency of the company who is offering this plan.
Where should I get travel insurance from for my mother in law? India or US? My MIL is traveling from India to US for 6 months. I did a quick analysis of the insurance plans available in India for her and they dont seem to be adequate. travel insurance? I need advice because I get conflicting advice from travel programmes. Dr Hilary Jones (TV doctor) said aswell as your travel agents insurance you should also take out separate insurance if your traveling to the States. We are planning our next holidays to Miami next year after this year we had a fantstic time in Orlando we want to travel to Miami next year. But this year my mother (who will be traveling with me) has found out she has type 2 Diabetis and has to take tablets. Aswell as our travel agents insurance should we also take out separate insurance because I know that medical treatment in the States is very expensive. Or would the travel agents like AXA insurance from Thomsons travel agents would be adequate. Thanks for your very helpful replies I can't decide which answer to choose.
Travel insurance - which plan to pick? My husband and I are going on a trip to Disney in May. I'd rather spend a little money now and not need a policy than not pay anything and regret it if anything comes up. I've checked many sites, and I'll be going through squaremouth.com - but how do I know which policy is best? Should I go for the ones that cover delays with less time(6 hours vs 8 hours) or more money for lost baggage, or should I just go with the one that offers the most at the cheapest price?
World travel insurance for Canadians without provincial health insurance? World travel insurance for Canadians without provincial health insurance I am looking for an international backpacker medical travel insurance provider that doesn't let the fact that my MSP (or similar provincial health insurance) is no longer valid. I have been out of Canada for 3 years and certain insurance providers require a provincial plan from the home country of the traveler to be in effect before providing insurance. I need to find a reasonably priced alternative catering to backpack travel (without the requirment of needing to return home withing a period of time). My MSP is no longer valid. Thx.

Need to find travel insurance -- help!? My fiance and I are going on our honeymoon to Jamaica in October and we need to get travel insurance. We'll be there from 10/6-10/13. We are flying with United/US Airways, which is part of the reason we want insurance (in the event of a cancelled flight). Mostly we are just looking for something that will protect our trip/costs in the event that something is cancelled or delayed or something (not necessarily travel medical insurance). I've been looking at the various travel insurance sites and comparing plans/prices, but I have no idea what I'm looking for. I know if a price is too much or not, but as far as coverage I want/need/etc. I'm clueless. Help!!!

Concerned recipient regarding Employment Insurance and investigating a travel? I am currently an EI recipient. When I was still employed, I had a planned a one-week vacation outside of Canada however I lost my job, and still ended up going on the trip. Can anyone tell me the possible outcome of this? What would be the penalty owed?

Expatriates - What Kind of International Health Insurance do You Have? I've been living abroad for 20 years now, and have depended on local national insurance. But now I'm looking for more comprehensive health and life insurance (got married, finally, a couple of years ago). I do a lot of travelling, and I soon I will relocate to another country. One medical Insurance plan I'm considering is called "International Health Insurance danmark" (IHI), part of an organization called "British United Provident Association" (BUPA). Has anyone heard of this? Or can you recommend any other companies? Thanks a million!
What should I do for health insurance when studying or working in South Korea? I plan to travel to South Korea, either to teach English or study at a university. What sort of health insurance options do I have for studying or working abroad? By the way, I live in the U.S. When I spoke with Blue Cross in my state, they told me that I have to be a resident of my state to maintain coverage, and that it's "iffy" whether I could maintain coverage while abroad. So, I'm wondering what other options there are.
ABC Demands ‘Answers’ on U.S. Health Insurance Ills; Ignores Canadian Problems? ABC Demands ‘Answers’ on U.S. Health Insurance Ills; Ignores Canadian Problems On Monday’s "Good Morning America," the ABC program shifted into full advocacy mode as anchor Chris Cuomo investigated the health insurance industry. A week after the network promoted Michael Moore’s new documentary "Sicko" for over 21 minutes, co-host Diane Sawyer announced that, regarding health care, the program was demanding "some answers" with a new segment. According to Sawyer, the series is "for you, for all of us." At the close of the report, the ABC anchor even pleaded with the audience for examples of nefarious health care companies: Diane Sawyer: "...If you have an insurance company policy, a question that you want to raise, you want us to tackle something that you think the insurance companies are doing, you write to us. You let us know about it. ABCNews.com. We are on the case." And while Cuomo was "on the case" of a woman who had difficulty getting her insurance company to approve a much needed eye surgery, there has been no similar look at Canadian horror stories where government run health care made one woman with breast cancer wait three months for radiation treatment. A report by the Canadian Fraser Institute found that the average wait time in that country to see a general practitioner was 17.7 weeks. One such incident found a woman waiting over three months to receive radiation therapy for breast cancer: A similar lawsuit was filed in Quebec on behalf of 10,000 women with breast cancer who were forced into long waits for radiation therapy. Anahit Cilinger was one such patient. After having a lymph node removed in October 1999, she was put on a waiting list for radiation therapy. Three months later and with no end to the waiting in sight, she traveled to her native Turkey and paid $12,000 for the treatment. Sawyer began the piece by proclaiming "a GMA commitment to take a hard look at the health insurance industry, to get some answers about those policies we keep hearing about, about what happens to sick people in a time of need." One would assume that such a commitment would include investigating long wait times and other ramifications of adopting government controlled plans. The case of Shannon Dagher, the woman featured in the GMA piece, is certainly sad. After being diagnosed with a rare eye disorder, Ms. Dagher needed a surgery to prevent blindness. Instead, her insurance company, Blue Cross, launched an investigation into her claim. (They ultimately payed for the surgery.) But while unfortunate, it’s no less real then that of Canadians who must resort to leaving the country to obtain treatment. Sawyer describe the "GMA Gets Answers" segment as a new feature, one that viewers should expect to see again. Hopefully, the ramifications of universal health care will also be discussed. Michael Moore’s appearances promoting his new health care movie, "Sicko," can be found here and here. A transcript of the segment, which aired at 7:39am on June 18, follows: 7:20am tease Diane Sawyer: "And we got word this woman's health insurance company was threatening to cancel her coverage when she needed it the most, so GMA went into action. She's not the only one and we're going to get some answers." 7: 30am tease Sawyer: "And coming up in this half hour, this is one of those stories that has Americans up in arms about insurance companies. You're going to meet a young woman whose doctors say that she needs surgery or she could go blind. But her insurance company threatened to cancel her coverage. Why? A controversial practice. This morning, Chris Cuomo's on the case. It's our new series 'GMA Gets Answers,' for her and for you, for all of us." 7:39am Sawyer: "Well, today we are announcing a GMA commitment to take a hard look at the health insurance industry, to get some answers about those policies we keep hearing about, about what happens to sick people in a time of need. Today, you're going to hear about something called rescission. It is a controversial practice where insurance companies retroactively cancel the policy, often after you're trying to make a claim. Chris Cuomo here again with the story of a young woman who faced a real crisis. Her sight was at risk." ABC Graphic: "GMA Gets Answers: Can Your Insurance Be Taken Away?" Cuomo: "Absolutely. Now, as background, in this country there are thousands of people purchase their own insurance. They don't get it through a union or through their work. The young woman you're about to meet has a story that could happen to any of them. According to the industry's, the insurance industry's own estimates, thousands of similar rescission investigations into policy holders occur every year. And most of them lose their coverage as a result. It's a frightening practices you might miss in the fine print of your health insurance policy. Shannon Dagher, a 22-year-old college student, says she was at the eye doctor for a check-up last November, one month after her new insurance policy kicked in when she received terrible news." Shannon Dagher (Denied Insurance): "I was diagnosed with a very rare disorder It's called pseudo tumor cerebri. It basically looks and acts like a brain tumor." Cuomo: "Now, Shannon's doctors say she needs surgery or she may go blind." Dagher: "I'm petrified of the thought of going blind. I've never been sick before in my life. And now, in the past six months, I've started to lose my peripheral vision and I'll never get that back." Cuomo: "But instead of authorizing the surgery, here insurer, Blue Cross of California stopped processing her bills. The company, whose slogan is 'Put the power of blue to work for you,' instead launched and investigation into Shannon. It threatened to cancel her coverage if she had failed to disclose accurate information about her health, like headaches on her original application. But look at Shannon's Blue Cross application. It lumps headaches with more serious conditions like epilepsy, paralysis, stroke, all in one question. She didn't have any of those serious conditions, so she checked no." Dagher: "I never lied to Blue Cross on my application. At the time when I got the insurance, I had no knowledge that anything was wrong with me." Cuomo: "Legislators around the country are paying attention to this little known practice. The state of Connecticut has just passed a law to make it harder for health insurers to pass rescind policies." Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal: "These instances are hardly isolated or random. They are part of a pattern, a prevalent practice in this industry that very simply has to be stopped." Cuomo: "Just getting an insurance company to talk about rescission is not easy. It's Chris Cuomo from ABC News. The best we could do was get Blue Cross on the phone. Why do you rescind a policy?" Voice of Shannon Troughton (Wellpoint Spokesperson): "It's an very important tool for us to address any identified issues of abuse or misrepresentation. Anyone who causes fraud in the system increases the costs of health care for all of our members." Cuomo: "We called eight other insurers. None would talk to us on camera and referred us to their trade group. Isn't this about saving money for the company?" Susan Pisano (America's Health Insurance Plans): "Health insurers pay large claims and pay millions of dollars in claims every day." Cuomo: "Isn't it a little fishy though that this rescission review process only begins after someone files a claim? Isn't that suspicious? You know, why don't you just do it when I'm applying in the first place, figure out whether I'm telling you the truth, like most industries. Here, I filed a claim because I'm sick and now you start looking at me?" Pisano: "Well, here's the way it- Here's the way it work. Here is the way it works. A policy is rescinded only if someone could have known that the condition existed, they were asked about it on the application and they didn't provide the information." Cuomo: "GMA went back to Blue Cross for clarification on Shannon Dagher's case. What really surprised us was that shortly after we asked about Shannon's policy, she learned that her investigation was complete and her policy would not be canceled. Then, Blue Cross denied Shannon's policy had ever even been considered for rescission. It said in a statement to GMA, 'Although she may have received a letter from us indicating a review was being conducted in the past, her policy was not rescinded. For you to report that this member's issues are in any way linked to rescission would be erroneous and misleading.' But Blue Cross had sent Shannon multiple letters telling her that the, quote, 'rescission review process was under way.' And while Blue Cross says it sent Shannon this letter telling her the review was complete, Shannon tells us she never got anything in the mail." Cuomo: "You're the trade group. You're speaking for them. They don't want to talk to me about it. All they say is 'Don't say she was rescinded,' but she was going through that review process. She wasn't getting her claim paid." Pisano: "The companies we represent understand full well the impact of the process of rescission. It must be terribly disruptive, especially at a time when somebody is sick." Cuomo: "Like Shannon, who recently had to drop out of college because of her sickness and hopes her insurance company will not add any more to her troubles." Dagher: "To be accused of fraud when I have no defenses, when I'm sick and when I'm relying on the coverage that they promised me and that is due to me, it really shakes my faith in humanity and the good of people." Cuomo: "But there is some good news. The company authorized the surgery. Shannon, who has a basic policy with a high deductible, did not file suit. And just recently, Blue Cross of California did authorize the surgery that surgery that may save her vision, so remember that. And a California attorney is currently settling a class action suit against Blue Cross of California. The settlement will require the insurer to prove there was intentional misrepresentation before they can cancel a problem. The insurer is denying any wrongdoing but has agreed to revise and clarify the application policy filled out by potential clients." Sawyer: "So, after we started looking into it, word came-" Cuomo: "Yes. We're not saying cause and effect, but we started looking into it. All of a sudden they started saying that's not even going on what you said was going on, but Shannon certainly thought it was." Sawyer: "Well, we want to let everyone out there know that if you have an insurance company policy, a question that you want to raise, you want us to tackle something that you think the insurance companies are doing, you write to us. You let us know about it. ABCNews.com. We are on the case."
Travel insurance for existing conditions and dangerous activities? Hi I am looking for some travel insurance (I am based in the UK) to cover me doing hazardous activities, (I am planning to do the Inca Trail in Peru next year, which is trekking over 2000 m.) How can I get travel insurance when booking through online travel agents (travelocity, expedia..)? My grandfather is very ill, and may leave us any day now. I am planning on going to Israel for the summer, but would like to purchase travel insurance to be safe. I only see the option for "Ticket Protector Plus", which states: "Satisfaction Guarantee: Within 10 days of purchasing the program, Access America will process a full refund of premium to you, as long as you have not already departed on your trip or filed a claim. No refunds shall be paid to you after 10 days of purchasing the program." I only get a refund if I cancel within 10 days of purchasing the program? That sounds a bit off and unreasonable. Does anyone know of a website that offers a better travel insurance?

Can a Canadian get insurance for medical treatment in the US? I have had a chronic medical condition for the last few years - and the Canadian doctors have not helped me at all. I plan on going to the US for a second opinion and for any tests they'll want done. Can I get insurance to help cover the cost somewhat? (This is not the same as travel insurance or emergency insurance.) Also no doctor in Canada is forwarding me down there - I am going by my own choice. I don't know if this is considered a "pre-existing condition" though. My doctors say its nothing. But I have had stomach problems for the last few years.
Is it possible for a UK resident to get car insurance in the US? I am planning to travel to the US for 2 months and was hoping to buy a car in California and drive it to New York. I have been trying to find out if will be possible to get insurance since I am not a resident of the US and it is looking increasingly difficult. I contacted Progressive Insurance company in the US and they said that I would have to have an address plus they would be unable to write a policy as the laws change between states and I would be travelling between states. Is there anything I can do to get around this?

Can someone please explain how health insurance works to me? Ok, I realize this question shows how ignorant I am about the real world, so I'm embarrassed but I have to be honest: I have no idea how health insurance works other than that it covers certain medical expenses! I'm just getting out of college so I am not used to having to deal with this. I know you pay a monthly fee, but what is a deductible? How does this work? For example, say a company charges $50/month with a $2,500 deductible fee...when would I have to pay the $2,500, if ever? I need the most affordable health insurance possible... I am really struggling with money at the moment. I am a U.S. citizen with a very very good health record. 22 yrs old and non-smoker. I plan to travel to Canada (Montréal) and live there for about 6 months after I graduate. If I get health insurance in the U.S., will this cover me in Canada as well? Thank you for any info, it will really help me out a lot!

What is the best time to visit Universal Studios in Orlando? I want to go august 13-20. I plan to buy insurance through the travel agency. Are lines long at this time? What would the weather be like? Cruising questions from a first-timer.....? My husband, daughter (will be 6) and I are planning on a cruise to Alaska May of 2008. We definitely want to go on the inside passage. My questions..... 1. Is it best to book your cruise as soon as they are released for purchase? We want to do a budget cruise the first time out. 2. I have heard some say they didn't pay until they went on the cruise. How is that possible? Deposit? Anywhere I have looked they ask for full payment. 3. How do you get the free upgrades I have heard of? ie: better cabin if the ship isn't full. 4. If the price of your cruise goes down after you book, do you get the lower price? How? 5. Should I get a travel agent? Is there any cost to me? And can they really save me more than the internet? 6. Do you recommend travel insurance? 7. We are thinking of going on NCL. Is the room service really free? 24 hours? How is the food? 8. Anyone know about NCL's kid's club? Thank you to anyone that takes the time to answer my many questions
Which route to travel? Host family or guided tours? My plans to travel to Japan/Korea/Thailand are being put into motion for next year. I was looking at the guides and wasn't too fond of them since it seems a bit boring having to do the whole tourist thing, looking at tourist areas and being branded as a tourist with the group. It wasn't until a month ago a friend of mine told me that they have host families in Japan that would be more than happy to host for foreigners. The benifets would be a personal approach to culture and everyday life as well as a family to spend time with and teach me things as I can teach them a few things. The only reason I am on the fence is because with the guide they give you a bit of a deal with the airplane tickets and travelers insurance incase something goes wrong... what would be a better route? has any one been a host family or had one when traveling?
Will it affect insurance payments if an officer wrote an erroneous citation in a 10-44? I was involved in a 10-44 (accident without injuries) today. The guy who hit me turned across two lanes of traffic and struck the passenger side of my vehicle. I was traveling in the left lane, planning to turn left about half a block up from where I was. I don't have my copy of Michie's Traffic and Law Manual in front of me at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it's a two-point violation to turn into the lane farthest from where the turn is started. The officer wrote a "warning" citation to the gentleman for failure to yield right of way when "turning from private property," which won't carry a fine since it's a warning. What I'm worried about is that the insurance company won't understand that the other motorist was negligent in crossing a whole lane of traffic to strike me in the farther lane. Am I worrying needlessly?
home insurance when not living there full-time? I am purchasing a new home and will not be residing in the home for three months. However, I plan to travel back and fourth and will occuy the home and move some belongings in several times during that three months. Will I still be covered if there is loss? Insurance companies all ask if this is your full-time resident. I cannot say yes, since I am not actually living there full-time. So what does one do here? They all say they cannot cover me since I am not actually moved in and residing there full-time. I know they must cover people, because when I went out to look at houses for sale, over half were vacant, many for months. How are these people insured, or do they just not know if their house burned down, they would NOT likely be covered?
Croatian tourist visa - has anyone ever got one from the Croatian Embassy in London? I am on a South African passport, I know I need a visa, been trying to phone these guys about 50 times, only got through once, ended up with the wrong department and then cut off...So am planning to just turn up there tomorrow... can anyone shed any light on their procedures / requirements?? Obviously I'm taking along passport and a multitude of other documents (bank statements, plane ticket, proof of accomodation, travel insurance etc...)
Can anyone suggest a good Travel Agency (Las Vegas to Cancun)? I live in Las Vegas and will be taking a vacation to Cancun in August. I have found some pretty good deals online, but I would like an actual travel agaent to work out all of the details like insurance and the other necessities. This is my first time planning a trip and I so I'd rather have help with all the things I havent even thought about. If anyone knows a good agency in Las Vegas or at least a National Agency in the US that has easy access to an agent by phone, that would be great. Also does anyone know if resortvactionstogo.com is an actual travel agency? If so do you get an assigned agent you can contact? thanks in advance Mike
Will it be safe to visit Istanbul in August? What about cruising through the Greek Islands? Considering the bombing breaking out in Isreal. I have a cruise scheduled for the end of August, should I plan to go somewhere else instead? (travel insurance would cover the costs) I would be sad about going somewhere else, I am really looking forward to seeing all the beautiful mosques and palaces... but this war that broke out is looking pretty scary...
Uniderinsured Accident claim? I was involved in a motorbike accident in Palo Alto, CA. I separated my shoulder during the accident. The other party barely had enough insurance to cover my medical expenses. I missed 10 days of vaction and travel plans and so I filed an underinsured motorist claim with my insurance compnay. After a month of wasting time, I'm told that I have to settle with the other company before my claim can be processed. But I would lose my rights to sue the other driver, and I have an arbitration clause on my insurance, so I can't sue them. What should I do? Is it unreasonable to ask my insurance company what they're willing to pay in this case?
Global medical insurance? What is the best global/international medical insurance? Question Details: Hi. What is the most comprehensive individual-policy medical insurance that includes prescription drug coverage? I want to teach English in China someday and it depresses me that I won't be able to retain my job's medical insurance for USA coverage. I'd have to purchase my own. I'm afraid that I might get a plan that won't cover important things if I get sick and want to travel back to USA for treatment..
Holiday planned but had to cancel? hey guys. my family and I in Australia has a vacation planned to go to Queensland, but my dad has an infection in his leg and is currently in hospital and will be impossible for him to come out in 2 days time when our plane flight is. unfortunetly, we did not get travel insuarnce as my mum thought that travel insurance JUST meant if our luggage was stolen or somthing. Do you think we will be able to reschedule with a doctors certificate or ANY money back? Thanks. Best Answer gets voted best Answer

Ok, so this is all the I.D. that I have, An expired passport, it expired in 2001 An expired Medicare card, new one is in the mail, but wont be here before friday My LEARNERS driving permit (it has my photo on it, it allows me to buy cigarettes) My social insurance card A letter head note from my work stating that I have worked there more then six months (I needed this to renew my medicare card because I lived in the states for one year in 1999) I recently flew from Quebec to B.C. and for the plane my learners permit was enough I.D. but this is from Canada to the U.S. If someone could let me know if this would be enough, or give me a number where I could call and find out if this enough it would be very much appreciated THANK YOU IN ADVANCE :)

Working my way around the world!? At the end of this year I plan to head off overseas, primarily to travel around Europe :) I have been researching about overseas travel but would very much like any other advice and tips from experienced travellers. e.g Work Visas, Travel Insurance. Saving for a gap year? I am hoping to go on a gap year very soon and have found a great company to go through. I'm going to be taking the Trans Siberian Railway across Russia, Mongolia and China making stops all over before training with Shaolin Monks for some months before finally moving on to work in Australia. The company has priced the whole excursion, everything included except travel insurance, at £5,500 which I find to be a reasonable price. I have a small amount saved up but ideally I want to go on the trip early next year, sometime in spring. Anyone got any tips on how to earn enough before spring? I did have a job which I left because it required long hours for poor pay and I worked out it would take me many more months than I would like of working there to be able to save up enough. I am pretty young and plan to go to Uni after this gap year so no degree level skills to fall back on; however I do have A levels. Anyone got any tips/anecdotes of how they saved for their gap years?
What are some ideas for a side business that I could do during dead hours at my curent retail job? I manage a small picture framing business very close to my home. I make a very small wage there (under $10.00 per hour) and I need to make an extra $100.00 per month in order to upgrade my family's current health insurance plan. The hours and the location of my job are ideal. I have 2 disabled children that need a lot of my time right now to help them with their development issues. With all of the travel involved in driving them to each of their therapy, school, and treatment centers, I am unable to work a second job. So, in conclusion I am looking for ideas for a side business that I could start and do during the 3-4 hours a day that I sit in my store waiting for customers to come in. Keep in mind; this is a convenient dead end job. There is no room for advancement so advertising for the store or bringing in more business is not going to increase my pay or benefits (declined for more $ per hr.). I am looking for ideas for side work to be done while waiting. No Quixtar please!
Traveling around a military schedule? My husband and I are planning on going on a cruise in November, approx. 3 weeks after he is SUPPOSED to get back from overseas on a deployment. The fear we have is that if his mission gets extended, and we are not able to go (which has happened to other units that are over there with his unit right now). We are weary of travel insurances, as they normally do not cover this. Does anyone know if Carnival will give us a credit for our cruise for us to go later on? Also, what about airlines (we will most likely fly Delta)? If we don't get refundable tickets, is there a way to turn them into a credit, kind of like Southwest does? I think we can just get a hold on a hotel room but not be obligated to pay unless we cancel less than 24 hours before we are supposed to stay. Anyone with any experience in this?
My two year old has a cut- should I take him to seek medical attention? Please answer quick!? My son was running across the cement at the park an hour ago, barefoot, and tripped. The only injury he has is also his first "real" cut- so I'm not sure how to handle it. His big toe has been cut open and was bleeding everywhere. The tip of it has piece of skin hanging off. It could be dead skin, but it was bleeding profusely. Luckily I had a travel first aid kit, so I treated it immediately. Usually my son shakes injuries off and wants to keep playing. This time, he asked to go home. He screamed the whole way home, which isn't like him. Now we are home and he is lying down with his foot elevated and bandaged up. I gave him some children't Tylenol. He isn't crying and even asked to use the restroom. When he gets up to walk (he's a determined little boy) he has to stay off of that toe. His mood is somewhat alert and happy, but I know he is in some pain. Should I call a medical professional or just continue to treat it at home? We don't have a good insurance plan. THANKS for your opinions and insight! It's always nice to hear encouragement in situations like this. And you are right, I'm sure he's fine, it's just hard to tell the first time around. Good thing my husband is at work, he freaks out over small things like these!
