What are the reasons to get both Short-term and long-term disability income insurance? I'm thoroughly confused as usual. But, if you have the option to get both short and long term disability insurance why would you? Does the short term cover things the long term doesn't? Doesn't long term cover the short term period as well anyway? Or do you have to have both to be covered in the immediate future and long term??? Why does everything have to be so complicated why cant there just be one kind of disability insurance its soo annoying....Which one would you get or would you get both???? arrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggg. I'm only 28 so don't know if thats a factor, in relatively good health...but in a profession that can be dangerous. Mental health field, direct care. What about individual policies, should I consider paying outside of the company if they dont offer both of these..... thank you for any assistance
Would it be better to opt. out on social security and get a long term disability insurance? I am 27 and was told that I could opt. out of social security, and could get a long term disability insurance alot cheaper. If I did this I woul dump the rest in my 401k, which will add up to around 400 a month.

long term disability insurance? I am interested in buying long term disability insurance. Anyone has a good company in mind to recommand?
I filed my California long term disability insurance claim 40 days too late and it was denied. Can you help? I am covered by a short term disability policy by my employer. Prior to my disability, I asked my HR department what I needed to do. I was told that my short term policy would kick in automatically and all I would need to do was fill out those forms once they were sent to me. I filled out the forms and received confirmation that my short term insurance had been activated. About 1 month after my disability, I received a reduced paycheck. When I inquired at work, I was told that I should have filed for long term disability along with the short term disability. I have since filed for long term disability but it was denied because I submitted my claim more than 40 days after the first day of disability. I know I can appeal. Has anyone else gone through this and was your appeal successful? Did you have to do anything out of the ordinary to win your appeal? Advising me to check with the labor board or my HR department isn't the help I am looking for. What I am looking for - Have you ever had to appeal a denied disability claim and did you learn something in the process that would help make the process go smoothly for someone in my situation. If I were answering your questions, I would put some real thought behind my answers!
I need information on getting long term stress disability from my job. Who do I need to contact first? Doctor? I have long term disability insurance available from my company at my expense. I just need to know the step to take to get a stress disability.
Long-term disability insurance wants 2nd psych evaluation after complaint is filed...Is this legal? How can I stop these people from harrassing me, and interferring with my recovery? I've paid into this long-term disabilty policy for years now, but since I've been recovering from severe depression I've had nothing but trouble from them. First they approved my case, then months later they required I undergo a "routine interview" conducted by some 3rd party admin company (not doctors). Then they ask for my doctors pysch notes, I declined of course, but my doctor sends all requested records regularly, aside from his private notes. Now months later they want me to undergo an evaluation with THEIR psychologist...which of course will be bias in their favor, and how can some guy that never met make any kind of VALID assessment of me anyway? All of this becuase the insurance rep believes...in her words, "you've been depressed for months now, nobody can be depressed that long". I've asked that she be removed from my case, but they won't allow me to change reps. HELP
Has anyone had experience with a "transferrable skills" analysis with an application for long-term disability? I'm waiting to hear from my long-term disability insurance carrier, and wondering what factors may be used in the process? I have submitted doctor's notes, tests, evaluations, etc., but I'm fearful of rejection of the claim.
California State Disability and Private Long Term Disability? Can you collect state and private disability at the same time. My mother is current on state disability for a terminal illness. She also paid for private long term disability insurance. Her private insurance company says that she can not collect both, but I haven't found anything that states that. Does anyone know?
Short & Long Term Disability Insurance? If someone is a not able to qualify for STD or LTD insurance. Are there any other options?. My friend has MS. She was just diagnosed. What can she do? Is there any options or insurance for her to purchase? She is self-employed. So, it's not like she's got group coverage. She doesn't want to have to loose everything to get on Medicaid to deal with her health issues.
Long Term Disability - Life Insurance? If you were no longer able to work and went on short and then long term disability from your job and then you die, is your family still eligible for life insurance that you had through your employer?
Should I max out on my long term disability insurance or is LTD insurance a scam? As far as I can tell LTD will not come close to paying out it's maximum promises because they "offset" any other sources of income!!! I am paying big time monthly payments for supposedly $3000 a month (assuming I get injured off duty), but after offsetting it appears LTD will only pay me $1300 a month. So why should I max out on my LTD insurance instead of paying for just $1300 worth? Maxing out costs $90 a month and paying for $1300 coverage will only cost $30 a month. Is my figuring and thinking correct on this subject?
I reappled for long term & short term insurance at work and once again was denied. Is this LEGAL? A few days ago, I received my letter denying me long term & short term insurance coverage. The letter stated, "As you know, the insurance you are applying for is medically evaluated and certain health standards must be met to be eligible for enrollment. Another review has been made of the insurability applications you completed. Based on your condition of insulin dependant diabetes diagnosed 1989, it has been determined that our original decision to deny Short and Long Term Disability insurance coverage cannot be changed. Other pertinent health history includes high blood pressure and acid reflux." The letter goes on to state I have 90 days to appeal this decision. I must say I HAD this insurance and dropped it shortly after starting at The State of Texas. Does this mean I will never be eligible or should I fight this with an appeal? I can brag and say I don't call in sick (very often) and do a great job at work. I work 13 hour days and have a 2 year old son!!!!!!!!!
Is it possible to get my 71 yr old father long term disability? My father has slight dementia and his kidneys are starting to be a problem. The doctor says he will need dialysis in 6-12 months. The assisted living facility we would like to send him to is $5800 per month. Is it possible at this late stage to buy long term insurance that can help pay for assisted living?

Anyone know of an insurance company you can get disability insurance through if already have a disability? If you already have a pre-existing condition (a disability), most insurance companies don't seem to allow you to get short or long term disability insurance. Are there any companies that will allow you to get short or long term disability anyway, with the exclusion that if you become disabled due to your disability it won't cover it, but if you become disabled some other way (like an accident or something) then you would be covered? I know they call these "riders" but can't find a company willing to do this. Looking for a company that will. Anyone know of any?
Has anyone had dealings with ALLSUP being hired through their long term disability policy???? Hi, im wondering if anyone has had a long term disability policy and then THEY hire ALLSUP on their own to help with your social security disability cases. When you are approved and long term disability wants a chunk of your back pay do they give money to allsup?? have they been able to ''attach'' your back pay so they all get their cut before you even get your ssd back pay deposited or a check written out to you from SSD???? I got a letter from my LTD provider saying they want a release filled out by me so that SSD can/will give info regardling your case to both the long term disability insurance company and also allsup...but im wondering that once this is done if they can attach your pay before u even see it or if they give it to you (SSD give it to you either via check or direct deposit) and THEN you give what they are requesting to the long term provider and then you get rest. im just wondering because i am planning on doing negotiations.
Would anyone know what limitation long term disability claims would have? I live in Canada and I'm 56 years old and had a right leg amputation which ended my working. I'm on long term disability but my insurance company has not indicated how long this would continue. I have other health problems with my other leg and hands due to diabetias. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through a similair situation?
Is disability insurance worth the investment? I have the option of signing up for long-term disability insurance through my place of employment. When I was young and single, I really never considered insurance much. However, now that this once wild stallion has been domesticated into family life, it seems that there are other concerns that need to be met, such as ensuring continued support for my family in the event that something should happen. I still think insurance is a scam, but apparently a necessary evil these days. For those of you who question my willingness to label insurance as a scam and necessary evil, I recall first hand the dilemma my mother had after a severe accident. Despite having paid her premiums on time and being declared as disabled after the accident, the insurance company did everything it could to weasel out of paying her the premium. She had to get a lawyer and fight it in court, eventually winning, but not without legal costs. Hence, my view of insurance companies.
What retirement options for long-term disability? - With disability insurance providing your income, can you invest in an IRA account (i.e. does it count as earnings)? - Is there any way to invest in a 401k? Are you no longer eligible for your previous employer's 401k, or can you ever remain in that plan even if you are no longer working for that employer?
I am on long term disability. I am experiencing problems getting health insurance. Any ideas?? I cannot get medicaid because I make too much money. I cannot draw medicare for two years. My major problem is prescription coverage. At this point I don't care about hospital coverage. I have COPD so I have a lot of medications that I have to take to stay alive. How long can u be on Short Term Disability in IL & still get paid? I have short term disability insurance at work, I have been employeed there for 1 1/2 yrs. How many months can you be off of work & still get paid through your short term disability insurance? What % of your income does short term disability pay (before or after taxes)?
short-term disability income insurance, question about premiuim? I pay for my short-term through work which covers me for 6 months in the event of a disability but could get additional months coverage to compliment my long-term policy which kicks in after 6 months. Does the premium you pay for a Short-Term group plan cost more if you choose a plan when applying for coverage with a longer duration of coverage, since the insurance company would be taking a greater financial risk having to pay you for additional months. Say you got the plan with with 12 months coverage as opposed to only 6 months would that mean in the event of a disability that lasts atleast a year the insurance company would be paying your income for a much longer duration of time (6 more months) thus requiring a higher premium due to the added financial risk they are taking due to length of payments (12 months)?
where can a person on long term disability get and bad credit get financial aid to go to school? i am currently on long term disability fro work because i need two major surguries my job recently stopped paying for my insurance and the doctors told me that with what i have i would not be able to continue what i was doing so i want to goto school to take care of my family
I need help with disability insurance? I am looking for any recommendations for companies offering short and long term disability insurace and what kind of disability insurance I would need. I am 24 married with no kids at the moment. My job is very low-risk and does not offer disability.
disability insurance percentage of income covered? my long term disability income insurance policy is set at 60% of my salary covering through age 65 I also have a short term policy that covers me until that 180 days is up and the long term kicks in, does this sound sufficient or should I get an life insurance policy with a monthly disability rider which pays an income as well that my insurance agent is trying to sell me to support my long term policy.. I dont make enough income to qualify for any of my insurance agents supplemental long term disability plans to help with the long term plan I have through work thats why he suggested the life insurance with the monthly disability rider
When should a person file for disability if he is missing too many days from work due to illness.? I have short term and long term disability insurance at work. I have also used up fmla and went on supplemental medical leave. I have since gone back to work and accumulated additional fmla, but still my attendance is not what it should be. my question is, instead of geting fired for poor attendance and losing my insurance, and job, when should i file for disability insurance which i have been paying for for sixteen years. It would be less than my earned income but would be better than nothing and no other employer would pay what i could draw on disability.
anybody familiar with a "monthly disability rider" attached to a life insurance policy? any catches here sounds too good to be true like knocking out two birds with one stone. Is it as good as short/long term disability income insurance? the way it was explained to me is that it actually works the same way as disability income insurance as it will allow you to deduct from the overall amount of life insurance your covered for by month. For instance, you have 100,000 you get disabled for 4 months, and you take out 2000 a month and end up at the end with a 92,000 policy.
Can you collect disability insurance from your employer if on bedrest during pregnancy? Would it be under FMLA or short/long term disability if you can?
Long term disability insurance!!!? I am 25 years old and couple of years back I had a terrible car accident. Doctors didnt expect me to survive. I have an artificial graft attached to my heart for "Aneurysm" and I have a rod in my right leg. If you see me personally, then you will never be able to make out that I ever I had an accident. Doctors said that my young age was a positive point in my total recovery. I am an engineer and I can do most of my day to day activities normally, but say suppose I have some complications in future and I am not being able to perform my job, then should I get some kind of disability insurance? The accident was not my fault. The 16 year old kid who was driving that sports car, caused an accident and died. I am left with an artificial part of my heart and a broken leg. I might even become handicap after a while, so should I go for the disability insurance? How does it work? Will it account for my pre-existing health condition caused by someone else? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
combining long and short term disability policies or two long term policies etc..? is it true that you cant get over 100% of your salary when you have multiple disability insurance policies from the same or varying companies. anotherwords, you cant take your 100% short term policy and combine it with an overlapping long term policy that covers at 60% and expect to get 160% back in income due to disability per month. It would just be 100%. The same with two different long term policies right? you won't be able to make back more than what your actually monthly income is at 100%.

Long Term Disability Insurance? I have recently been placed off of work for medical reasons and I flied through short term and now that I am on long term they are urging me to apply for SSI. I was told by my employer I am eligible for it till I am 67 but why are they so pushy, they have law offices calling me every day and I tell them no thanks, I don't need your assistance and they take that as I have applied and want to know my application date ect. Why are they so pushy and why is it any of their business, I think if it is a service my employer offered that shoudl be it. I think they offer it, they should pay it and if your eligible for SSI you should be able to collect that too. Why should anyone be short changed just becuase they don't want to pay for it anymore.
disability insurance question? im in what you could call a temporary position even though I'm getting 43 hrs a week, still part-time as the company hasn't switched my status to full time and most likely wont change it while in this position. Im only filling in for someone who is absent due to pregnancy. I make a measly 10 bucks an hr and as I said the position is temporary and sooner or later I should be moving into a real position that has a salary compatible with someone with a masters degree which may or may not be with the same company. So my reasoning is that I should just wait until I have a full-time position with stability and good income before I worry about getting short and/or long term disability income insurance...Does that reasoning make sense to others or should i get disability anyway even though my salary is bound to change probably within no later than 3 or 4 months....?? oh by the way as a part-time employee I would have to also purchase the disability income insurance outside of the company since it isnt offered for parttime employees. im 28 years old im healthy and have a good deal of savings wouldnt social security or whatever governmental or state funding care for my needs if I became disabled anyway since im only making 10 bucks an hr I wouldnt see it being much of a stretch what sort of requirements are there for a person to get help from the government in the case of a disability?
I will be receiving long term disability from the company I work for. I need prescription drug coverage? Do you know what insurance company might handle this type of insurance? I cannot afford the $425.00 per month for cobra.

Do I have to pay back money to long term disability once I received social security money? My insurance company is telling me that I need to re-pay them money. Not sure yet how much. I have been on LTD for 3 years. Just got approved for social security but for a closed period only. I received a back check for 3 years of S.S. Does anyone have information on Ontario government medical programs for long term disability coverages? I am a disabled amputed that has his private insurance running out at the first of the year and would like any information on Ontario goverment programs that would assist me with prescriptions, dental and eyeglass coverages.
Short term disability insurance? How many of you had short term disability insurance when you went on maternity leave? Is it worth it? Is it expensive? Does the federal government offer it in their benefits? How long before you go on maternity leave do you need to enroll in it? Sorry I have so many questions. I just got engaged and don't plan on starting a family for another couple of years. I know a lot of people here who are pregnant (I think there's something in the water here) and was just wondering what people do for money while they're out for so long. I haven't been working at my current job for very long (it'll be a year this March), so I'll probably only have about a month or two of sick and personal leave when the time comes. Or did you just save up money beforehand?
Is it legal that a long term disability policy can offset benefits based on ss? I am disabled. When I worked I bought long term disability. I received payments from them until I got social security. When I was awarded ss I had to pay them back a big sum of money. Now they are telling me since I get social security and my children do also based on my disability that they only have to pay me the minimum of $50 a month. Is this legal since this is private insurance that I bought? Should one thing have to do with the other? Thanks for the responses. I don't want my cake and eat it too. I just want to know the facts. I did not sign a contract. The only thing I filled out was a form years ago when I bought the policy. I did not know that one affects the other. The things that insurance companies do not tell you. Some day maybe I will get better and not have to deal with this and get back to work but until then I guess I have to follow the policies that I am just learning about.

Does anyone in GA know of any unemployment/short-term disability insurance for high-risk pregnancies? I am 24 weeks pregnant with my second child and because of some complications and the fact that my first child was born premature, I am now considered to be high risk. I work full-time right now, but I am not going to be able to work much longer because I am supposed to stay off my feet per the doctor's orders. I think I have heard of programs or insurance for situations like this somewhere, but from reading on the state's department of labor website, it does not seem like I qualify for unemployment insurance because I am leaving my job by my choice. Has anyone been in this situation before? Is there any program or service or insurance that might work for me? It is just not an option for my family right now to not have some sort of second income coming in. I really appreciate any advice you guys may have. I have always worked full-time and had money coming in, and this has me scared! BTW- The company I have worked for for the past year only has 8 employees (so no FMLA)
Guardian disability insurance questions? Is this a good policy? My broker says it's better than Aflac because it's non-cancellable and lasts until I'm 65 should I need it. He said that as a white-collar professional, long-term disability ins is important for me which I can understand since I need to protect my income. He gave me a health questionnaire to fill out. I'm not totally comfortable filling it out - is it standard to fill one out and do a physical exam and bloodwork like they want? If I take this policy, does this long-term disability ins totally replace Aflac (I have a 6 month policy through my employer). Does it make a difference that my broker is a proponent of the Lifetime Economic Acceleration Process (LEAP), which I think is hooey (I know LEAP is a subsidiary of Guardan)? Aside from that his description of Guardian disability insurance makes it seem like a good choice among several (Met, NY, Std).
Can I get short term disability insurance to pay my mortgage if I have to have knee replacement surgery? My doctor says I need knee replacement surgery and I will be out of work at least 3-4 months in rehab. Is there any type of insurance I can get to cover my mortgage payments. I have insurance that covers my credit card payments but not insurance for mortgage. My job will pay me part of my salary while I am out, but it won't cover all my expenses. I have little to nothing in savings. If I can get this insurance how would I get a quote and how long would it need to be in effect before I can collect from it? Estimated, how much would it cost per month for the coverage? Thanks Zajjo for the link. I will go there and look right now. Jo Mo, when is enrollment season? My job is as a plant manager. I walk around 90% of the time. I need both knees replaced. Thanks for your post!
I need to know if Long term disability kicks in automatically once Short term disability runs out?? I work for Progressive insurance company and they offer std and ltd automatically once employeed. They are trying to tell me that when my FMLA coverage runs out, they can fire me; from what I've found out, they cannot fire me until the day i'm released from my dr. back to work; however my dr. says i'll be out another month and i don't know if my std will last that long, so...does LTD normally just kick right in the day STD runs out? My HR dept is trying to screw me, so need some advice. I live in the state of FL, the company is headquarted in Ohio, if any of that 'law-applicable' info applies... (And if you're an atty and know whether or not I can actually be fired while on std, that'd be great too, cause i'm getting mixed answers!!)

BTW- The company I have worked for for the past year only has 8 employees (so no FMLA) Regarding the Medicaid answers, thank you, but I am confused, isn't Medicaid just for medical insurance? I guess my question was not really clear, I am now covered for medical insurance, I need something that will help supplement/replace my income while I am unable to work. Does Medicaid have a program like that? Thanks again!
Question about medical insurance/disability if terminal illness involved...? My mother was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer 2 months ago and given approx a year with chemo. Unfortunately, her liver couldn't handle the chemo, and she has been taken off her chemo. She had only short-term disability through her job, which she paid extra for. That short-term disability expires January 15. She has no long-term. Not good news. Her salary isn't what concerns me. She has medical insurance through her place of employment and also two different life insurance policies. One of the policies is furnished by her job. It equals to the amount of one year of her salary. The other, is one she paid extra for, through the same company as her medical insurance...I believe. My question is...if her doctor continues to approve her time away from work...which he said he would as long as her cancer is inoperable, will she continue to be able to receive her benefits from her job(medical insurance, life insurance, ect...)?
During open enrollment, std (short term disability) was not shown as an option...? During annual open enrollment, I recieved an employee open enrollment kit, which consisted of 3 pages outlining the various options of coverage. Of those were medical, dental, and vison of course and supplemental benefits, which included accident, critical illness, legal, pet, and identity theft. I showed no options of short or long term disability, and now that I inquire about them, my HR rep is telling me it is too late, and that it was listed inside the enrollment kit. Well, clearly it is not. Does ltd or std fall under accident insurance?? Does my employer have to allow me to enroll in either even if the deadlines have passed since it was never an option to begin with??
What do I say in this Memo? I am the benefits manager for a national furniture retail chain, The Home Centre, headquartered in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Most of the full-time employees who work for the chain pay into an employee benefits plan. This plan care, prescription drug coverage, and othe benefits. One of the most expensive benefits employees pay for is long-term disability insurance. Recently, your insurance provider, Cansafe, has informed you that due to the high numberof recent long-term disability claims, premiums for long-term disability insurance will have to rise substantially, on the order of 15 percent. For the average employee, this means an increase of more than $20 per month. I need to write a memo informing The Home Centre employees about the impending increase. Note: Most of the older employees, are big supporters of the long term disability insurance, the younger ones not as much.
Is there some one or a committee I can complain to about a poor performance by my attorney? I have a very good claim against the insurance carrier that carries my companies Long Term Disability insurance. They have denied my first claim as we expected but have given us 90 days to ask for an appeal. It has been 60 days and my attorney has done nothing because he is handling the case Pro Bono and he says since he is not sure how much money will be claimed he is just going to apply for the appeal at the 90 day mark. The only glich in them denying me my payments is because my attorneys first claim letter was later than their requirements. They agree I am disabled but they just say We were to late and now we are going to respond at another close call. Is there someone I can contact. I am in Atlanta Georgia.
