Insurance Costs Employers Knowledge Base
Who should bear the brunt of health insurance costs? Employers or taxpayers? Those people who work jobs with no benefits probably get health insurance through the taxpayer with programs like Medi-Cal and such. Someone has to pay the costs. And it's unrealistic to expect the worker to pay since he/she is not making enough to afford the high costs of health care. And before you say, "they should go to college and get a better job" remember that if everyone was able to do that, you yourself would be making much less money since the competition for your own job would be higher.
California employers and health insurance costs, are we getting ripped off? My employer recently stated that there was going to be a 27% increase in our health insurance premiums. When I call the insurance company, they denied any increase. Our local agent/broker refused to discuss it with me. When the deductions started coming out of my check it was an even 40% increase. The California labor board will do nothing without a written statement from the broker but the broker is stonewalling. Any suggestions to correct this obvious theft?
Can I reimburse myself health insurance costs from my company? We used to have individual health insurance, and I would pay for it out of my own company (an S Corp). When we got insurance through my husband's employer, I stopped reimbursing myself. He is paid for by the company, and then it costs extra to add myself and our child. I was just going to deduct health insurance premiums on our Sch A, but we don't have enough other medical expenses to meet the limit. Is it ligit to go ahead and reimburse myself the amount that it cost for the health insurance? Then it would be a business expense. Thanks.
Should employers offer health insurance benefits for our pets ? A group insurance policy from an employer should cost less money than buying individual policies for each individual animal. Do you feel yor pet is part of your family? I just had a expensive vet bill for my cat. Kiki, my cat, is ok now & will have a full recovery. Those vet bills can become quite high..
How do we get insurance companies to reduce medical insurance premiums to employers? Let's face it, here in the U.S. the medical insurance premiums for group health coverage is rising faster than inflation. As a result, a lot of companies are either reducing the levels of coverage in order to offset the cost of insurance, increasing the deductible, and or increasing the cost to the employees for the insurance premiums. The problem is that insurance companies have no incentive to reduce insurance premiums. They continue to get record profits and this issue is out of control. How do we get the insurance companies to decrease insurance premiums to the rate of inflation, or better yet, start reducing the cost of premiums for a change?
How much does you medical insurance cost through your employer? I am just curious. I am paying about 200 per month for medical and dental through my employer (coca cola). This is for the family plan which cover my wife and 2 kids with a 600 dollar deductible on medical. It has went up every year for the last 5 yrs.
Reducing health insurance costs? I have health insurance through my employer with 80/20 coinsurance and a $1000 deductable. My employer pays 60% of the premium. Are there any changes I can make to reduce my out of pocket expenses?
How much will health insurance cost me? I am going to be transitioning into owning my own business, which means I won't be having health insurance through an employer anymore. I'd like to get an idea of how much it will cost me to pay for health insurance on my own. I'm female, 25 years old, no medical problems to speak of. Can anyone out there give me a ballpark figure? Thanks!
Bachelors, how much does your Health insurance cost you? Bachelors, how much does your Health insurance cost you? I dont care if you have it with your employer thats not what Im asking. How much does it cost you independently per month if your employment doesnt have health ensurence? Im a healthy 28 year old male and I think I need to get health insurance myself without an employer.
I am recently married, my wife and I both have health insurance from our respective employers.....? would it be advisable for one of us to drop insurance from our employer and add to the other's? We looked at the costs and savings of dropping and adding me to her's and her to mine and there doesn't look to be any signifigant financial savings either way. Other than monetary savings, are there any other benfits to having both of us covered under the same policy? Are there any detriments to having us covered under different policies?
Are there any (non-employer) health insurance options for early retirees? My husband and I would love to plan for early retirement in a few years - the one obstacle seems to be health insurance. Neither of our employers provide health insurance after leaving the job (no matter when.) We will be in our late 50's (in a few years when we would like to retire) and have one 10yo child - could relocate if necessary after retirement. From what I've been reading it looks like family heath insurance costs are over $1000 per month! Any advice or direction is greatly appreciated!!
Does your employer provide you with insurance . Do they cover your family also or is that extra .? Just wondering if people are complaining about not having coverage when what they real mean is that the none working family members have none . Remember that you have to be contributing and working to have anything . Family problems often lead to poor productivity on the job . Your spouse can be cause for emotional stress reducing productivity at work . Single workers are much more efficient and men more so then women who need days off to deal with medical issues of abortion or vaginal problems with stds and reproductive issues raising employer provided insurance costs . SO when women in the work place complain about men receiving hire pay it is because they are more productive and have fewer medical needs . Before you women go nuts be honest . In determining pay should I consider the cost of medical care for women verses men on a purely financial bases .Admit it cost an employer much more for women then men . SO its not that you are not getting equal pay , your paying your way.
How much does your health insurance cost per year? Yes, this is a political question! So, what is the cost? I am not asking what it costs YOU; I'm asking what amount of money is paid in total to the insurance company to cover you and your family. What you pay, and what your employer pays, combined. Do you have any idea? Are there any other things you buy that you have no idea what the cost is? Do you think the fact that people are so insulated from the actual costs of health services causes the distortions in the market that result in such high prices and costs? Do you think consumer-based, rather than government-based, solutions, like medical savings accounts and more realistic tax treatment of employer-purchased benefits (treating it as taxable income and giving people an offsetting tax deduction or benefit) would be a better solution to people's present concerns? Thanks.
What type of insurance will cover the remaining 30%? My wife's health insurance (PPO) provided by her employer covers 70% of the costs. My employer does not offer health insurance. I would like a health plan to cover the remaining 30% but not sure if there is a special type of insurance for this specific purpose or if I would need to look for a second PPO. With kids in our near future I fear the 30% we pay will grow considerably.
Health Care Insurance Costs are soo high!? My wife is 28 years old, I'm 29 and non of our employers offer health insurance benefits. We're forced to pay for our own at $300 a month! That's $3,600 a year... it's too much for us considering we only visit the doctor once a year. I'm tempted to discontinue it but then again its tough not to have any health insurance at all. Any suggestions???
how much does an insurance premium cost a month? I am trying to go back to school full time in September and will lose the health insurance I have through my employer. I will need to obtain health insurance while I am in school. I am trying to find out how much a premium cost each month, as I will need the insurance for about 2 years, and just need a basic plan.
Cost of Commercial General Liability Insurance and others for Employers? Hi, I work in IT for a small company (75 employees). I often go to my client's places on projects. Liability - $1,000,000 Commercial General Liability-$5,000,000 Automobile Ability -$1,000,000 Thanks. Hi, I work in IT for a small company (75 employees). Liability - $1,000,000 Commercial General Liability-$5,000,000 Automobile Ability -$1,000,000 PS: I am en employee and I am being charged by my employer. $2.00 for every hour I work. i.e. almost $320-$350/month. -> $4000/year. I just wanted to know if I am being cheated or it it really costs so much. My employer says, he is distributing the cost of teh above insurance between 8 people and it turns out to be $4000/ year/person. Thanks.
Should employers offer incentives to employees who commute by bicycle? In this day and age of rising health insurance costs, employee and their family member's illnesses due to lack of physical exercise, and other costs such as the general costs associated with parking maintenance, etc., should employers become more proactive regarding issues like bicycling that will in the end save them money? For instance, an employer could install a couple of showers for bicycle commuters / exercisers, a modest locker area, cycle racks, have a bike to work day, create contests, etc. ... much more. It is implied that the facilities would be handicapped accessible and that the programs would encourage handicapped individuals ( handcycles for instance ) and encourage and inform all age groups about the benefits of exercise to improve health thus preventing the implication of discrimination for these reasons. How much does a health insurance rider covering bariatric surgery cost employers? Asking those people in HR and/or in the health insurance industry to give me a general idea on how much per employee it would cost. For example - company Widgets has 500 employees. On a standard PPO plan, they would pay $3000 a year per employee for coverage that does not include bariatric (obesity) surgery or treatments. If they would purchase a rider for coverage, how much per employee would Widget company expect to pay? Please people, do not answer if you do not know of what you speak, insurance companies DO sell riders, or addendums, to insurance plans. They are not individual, but effect the entire certificate of coverage for all employees. And I did not invite a debate on the effectiveness of the surgery or what you feel is right for treatment of obesity in general, this is a financial question, not a health or "moral" one.
Which health insurance plan would you prefer? 1) People buy health insurance for themselves, or receive it through their employers. Whatever cost is not covered is paid by the individual, or through Medicare or Medicaid if eligible. (present system)
How would you reform the US health insurance system? I am very leery of government control - I think the bureaucracy would waste dollars, and I'm extremely troubled by the idea of the government having so much control. I'd rather have my HMO cheat me than the government - at least there is one more than one HMO to belong to. But people who advocate government-run health care have a right to ask what the alternative is. I have a few ideas. 1) Make employer-supplied health insurance taxable income to the recipient, BUT offset the extra income with a credit for insurance. This would put people in charge of their own health care and keep them more in touch with what it costs. And the self-employed have to pay for insurance with after-tax dollars, which is unfair. Maybe employers would get out of this business somewhat. 2) Allow insurance companies more latitude to compete in a number of states. Increased competition should help some. Also encourage associations of private individuals to band together to buy insurance. (I'll have to continue this - stay tuned for more details!) 3) Reform the legal system. Punitive damages, contingency fees and the system of awarding attorneys' fees should all be on the table. (I'm a lawyer, and I have many criticisms of the legal system.) 4) Revisit tax policy - what incentives and/or penalties are needed for the insurance industry, the drug manufacturers, etc. 5) Enforce immigration laws to reduce the strain on medical facilities. 6) Coordinate with states and local governments to provide services targeted to the needs of the poor in those particular regions. Keep bureaucracy as minimal as possible. 7) Encourage charitable contributions to hospitals, etc. What's good about this list? what's bad? What did I leave out? Hey, it's a try. Thanks.
My employer changed insurance companies and My eye doctor does not take the new company? But I love my doctor I finally found a doctor I like and that is nice and patiend and explains things. So through my employer it cost me 5.34 a month I checked out individual insurance with the company I had before that my doctor does take and its 13.00 a month. Should I just go with my employer for cheeper and have to go to a new doctor or should I buy the outside insurance and stick with my current doctor. the only thing is I have to pay the 156.00 up front for the year and that's not even a problem. Will I still have good benefits what s the diffrence in buying on my own and buying it through my employer? I really do not want to change eye doctors.
Do employers usually fire employees that visit doctors too often (due to the high medical costs )? I am originally from Italy and I do not fully understand how health insurance works when it comes to the employer. When you visit the doctor; does the company that you work for also pay for the doctor visit and medical expenses incurred? If so, wouldn't an employer choose to fire you because of the expenses that you bring to the company with your doctor visits, MRIs, MRAs, X-Ray, Cat scan...etc...etc? I am in my late 20s and I have recently found out that I have a couple of pretty serious medical conditions that I have to see doctors for. I am literally afraid to have my employer suspect me of having costly serious medical conditions; and I try to schedule appointments far apart to avoid suspicion....[even though I am supposed to go the doctors NOW] Do employers usually fire employees that visit doctors too often for the fear of the medical costs they will incur?
What is the average employee portion of a health insurance policy? What percentage of the health insurance costs do most companies cover (I recognize that this can vary greatly, but I am looking for general numbers)? For Cigna - what is the average monthly cost for a family consisting of parents and one child (likewise, I recognize that this can vary greatly - I am just trying to get a ballpark figure)? I ask these as my current employer (250+ people) is offering Cigna insurance for about $750 a month which covers my wife, myself and my daughter. They claim to be covering 50% of the health insurance plan, but I am having a hard time buying the explanation that health insurance is just expensive...especially as my sister and brother are paying $50-70 a month for individual insurance. I do not want to have to go and get a quote somewhere and can not find a site that has general information like this - any thoughts, advice, sources of information would be welcome!
Should employers be forced to carry health insurance? QUESTION: With the cost of health care, DO YOU THINK EMPLOYEES SHOULD PROVIDE provide group health insurance for employees to buy? No matter how small the group? (i.e., individual insurance, in one way or another, is costly to those with pre-existing conditions) interesting, Gem! THANKS TO EVERYONE! ! ! I appreciate your input. I know what a struggle it is for small companies. I work for one right now. I just wish sometimes that there was some kind of provision for the small businesses to help them group together and have the great benefits most of the big companies have, so they would be financially able to provide benefits for their employees as well.
Are there any associations one can join that would then give you access to group health insurance? From my research so far, it appears that if you have a group health care coverage, it tends to be cheaper than if you have to buy the insurance yourself. For example, a family of 4 may pay as much as $700 a month or more for some decent coverage, but perhaps group coverage from your employer may cost you $400 or so. But if your employer does not offer it, are there any associations that offer health insurance to their members? Associations that anyone can join?
Does D&O insurance protect a director from trade secret related lawsuit? Hi - One of the director and officer of our company has signed an NDA (non-disclosure) & a PIA (Proprietary Invention) agreements with his previous employer (she was a director/officer at that company too). She will be working on similar stuff at our company. She is obviously not planning on using any trade-secrets she was privy too :-). That said if she or our company is sued by her former employer for trade secret violations, can the 1. D&O insurance cover the legal costs involved in defending a lawsuit involving the new director? 2. We don't have any D&O coverage right now, what kind of coverage should we ask for to deal with any legal issues that may come up with the new director on board? 3. How does the D&O insurance work - what percentage of legal costs are covered? How do you typically file a claim? I am not concerned with her PRIOR ACTS just to clarify only her ACTS in our current company that may invite a lawsuit from her previous employer. For example unknowingly using a business process in our company which her former employer may claim as a trade-secret.
Policy Question: Why is employer-provided health insurance not deemed income to the employee? It seems to me that much of the problem with health insurance is that people don't have much of an impression of its cost, so that they have no incentive to "shop around" for a better plan. Also, people who are self-employed have to pay for insurance in after-tax dollars - why are they treated less advantageously? I am interested in President Bush's plan to make the insurance plan taxable as income and give everyone a tax credit to purchase insurance. I think forcing every employer to buy insurance for its employees or pay a tax is going in the wrong direction, encouraging people to think someone else has to "take care of them." Why should health insurance be part of an employment package anyway? Food, clothing, and shelter - which are every bit as necessary as health insurance, if not much more so - are not provided by employers. We receive income from working, and buy it ourselves. What do you think?
Has it occured to you that if Dems force employers to provide health insurance to you(if you work)...? ... that it will decrease you future wages? There's only so much money in the pot for employee expense.Starting with say 20.00 per hour: direct compensation:12.00 government mandated withholdings (current) 2.50 That leaves 5.50 for "benefits" whether it is retirement, insurance etc. If government increases costs through additional mandates, where do you think the employer is going to take the money? Added: "companiies will raise prices to cover the additional costs..."Ever hear of "Global Competition"? Ask the textile, automotive, appliance manufacturers, etc how raising prices to offset rising expenses worked out for them.
Bachelors, how much does your Health insurance cost you? Bachelors, how much does your Health insurance cost you? I dont care if you have it with your employer thats not what Im asking. How much does it cost you independently per month? Im a healthy 25 year old male and I think Im going to eventually have to get health insurance myself.
how much does short term disability insurance cost? what are the premiums, if you have short term disability insurance on your own, to supplement an employer's plan or just to help out with bills if you're termporarily disabled? my last company paid 100% of short term - my new company only covers 60%. I had thought if you had a private policy (yes, they are available), that it would cover the 40% not covered. i have both std & ltd with my company, i don't need it right now, was just checking. thanks
Which health insurance plan would you prefer? 1) People buy health insurance for themselves, or receive it through their employers. Whatever cost is not covered is paid by the individual, or through Medicare or Medicaid if eligible. (present system) 2) People pay for their health insurance. Insurance paid for by employers is now treated as income to the individual, but each individual also receives an equivalent tax deduction or credit to buy insurance. (This has the effect of getting employers out of the health insurance business somewhat, and making individuals more active in the process.) Allow for more interstate competition among insurance companies. Individuals pay for whatever is not covered, with some govt assistance if needed. 3) People pay taxes for an insurance system administered the government. The level of coverage (and who pays what "premium" and who gets what service) is determined by the government. Which do you choose? Why? Are there any additions or changes you would make to my facts?

Why is health insurance so incredibly expensive? I am 32 years old with high blood pressure and obesity. I just started a new job (a small employer- only 3-4 employees), and we all desperately need health insurance. Kaiser wants to charge me $550 per month for my single policy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only earn 900 per month. If I go with Kaiser, I will only be taking home about 90 dollars each week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is absurd and unconscionable. I guess that Kaiser has a legal right to charge people whatever the hell they want to, but it's immoral. Wouldn't you agree? That high of a cost for health insurance is ludicrous. To JANET P- Excuse me- I have never heard anything so obtuse in my life. Excuse me- I don't care about my life at all? That is not only reckless, narrow minded, and irrational, but it's just plain offensive. Shame on you.
What is the cost of Insurance for dependent children in Arizona? My ex and I are (with attorneys) working out the child support/visitation. We origonally talked about him covering her through his employer since im a full time student and dont work, but he came back with a figure of 150.00 month just for her. I can get the same policy for almost hallf in an independant policy from the same ins co. Seems WAY off. Any way to just force him to cancel his wife's work policy's coverage for her? We havn't signed any docs yet, so nothing is really set in stone. But I know he gets a credit for the insurance cost on his child support, and he is doing anything and everything possible to lower the ammount.... Lame since shes now three, and hes done almost NOTHING for the last two years. Maybe I'm just a little jaded that he wants as little responsibility as possible, but if the policy can be had for less, why pay more?
Is there any health insurance plans out there...? That will cover you even if you are eligible for insurance through an employer? I can get it through my employer but the cost is absolutely outrageous. All the individual plans I have looked at say you cannot be eligible for benefits through your employer in order to be eligible for their plans. I just basically need coverage in case something happens, i'm a healthy 24 year old. I'm in Michigan BTW.
Low- cost insurance for my 2 year old??? Is it possible to get insurance for my 2 year old at a low rate WITHOUT insuring myself or my husband? We tried getting on our state's medicaid program (which was originally started for people who couldn't get health insurance through their jobs but left that behind long ago!) but of course my husband and I make too much money. Every insurance quote we've been given has been astronomical and we'd have to insure one or both of ourselves to get insurance on the baby. What can I do??? We've also both asked our employers to look into health insurance for their employees and it's still just too expensive!
i need health insurance coverage? recently divorced, going back to school. i cannot afford to pay rent, all utilities, food, car insurance and cobra on the support i get. the cobra insurance cost me $349.22 a month picking it up from my x-husbands employer. i have an appt. with a case worker this thursday to see if i can get any govt. help until i get out of school and get a job. of course i know to get a full time job i can get insurance, but i cant do that until school is out. what are the chances of me getting help from govt. i wonder? i am a severe migrain sufferer, and dont want to be without insurance, but i seriously cant afford it. i would love to cancel cobra, and keep the $349.00 for food and personal but i am afraid of pre-existing bull when i do get a job. any suggestions on what to do...i get heap help from govt, they help with my gas bill, but so far that is the only thing i get help with. i have a dentist appt. next month thru the health dept. for $20 i am getting my teeth cleaned. help!!! cobra sucks!!
Which would cost more, doing health insurance or your boss gives you his portion of money and you pay? So figure this out for the next year or figure it looking at the past year. If you have insurance through your employer pretend they gave you the money first instead of just paying to the insurance plan. Which would cost less, going through the health insurance company or going through your own pocket? (average family insurance can run between 450-900 a month, or individuals at 100-350 a month) Sorry I asked question both ways, but to correct the original question which way is cheaper. Paying out of pocket or going through any insurance company (group or individual). I used to have catastrophic insurance at my work place until I hired a guy who had a background with diabetes and surgery. Then instead of 300/month for two employees, the cost would have been 700/month for two employees. I had to stop offering insurance, just couldn't afford it. I have juvenile diabetes and even when I was buying the expensive meds it was always cheaper than paying for insurance. Insurance really just saves money if you are going down the hill or have a catastrophe.
Insurance Question? If I am pregnant and my current employer provided insurance covers maternity but then my husband gets a job out of state and we must move will his comparable insurance pick up my maternity costs even though it is a pre existing situation?
Low cost healthcare insurance for kids? Are there low cost healthcare insurance for kids other than Healthy Families? I had healthy families but due to sending my premium late, they disenrolled my kids. I am covered by my employer through Kaiser but there is a significant amount of money deducted if I cover them. Thanks in advance.
Personal Injury (Slip & Fall) - Payment of medical cost by Liability Insurance? My wife had fracture & a surgery due to fall outside apt. My landlord had taken ins for $6K under medical payments in his liability insurance. Now, ins company is ready to pay that $6K. Actual bill is nearly $12K. Part of the bill has been paid by my employer's insurance & I have remaining to be paid. Now, question is about how do I handle the $6K payment by landlord's ins - 1. Do I get the $6K from landlord's insurance, clear up the pending bills & pay the remain amount to my employer's insurance (ppl say that I need to pay the remain amount to my employer's ins). (OR) 2. Have hospital send pending bills to landlord's ins (problem here is - the bills will be sent by 3 entities &I learn that hosp will normally send complete bill and not pending bills. In this case, I am afraid how landlord's ins will pay to 3 entities. Iam afraid that one hosp will get the $6K and pay back my employer's ins whatever that is excess, leaving other bills to me). Please help.
what additional costs does an NYC employer bear on a $100k employee? I am in the conceptual stage of creating a small business, but am not sure what an employee actually costs. In other words if an employee has a stated salary of $100k, the employer (with a standard benefits package, ie, insurance, 401k, 2 weeks vacation, SS taxes, etc..) really needs to calculate the cost to the business to be $120K, more , less? for the purpose of tis discussion there are no other perks (no car, housing, school allowance etc..))
My husband has to provide health insurance in his child support order (please read rest if u think u can help) He provided insurance thru his employer and then we moved to CA (his daughter lives in MA) Out here, we could not find a carrier to provide insurance for her out there so her mother put her on her work insurance, and we paid 50% more in child support. In March, my husband became eligible to put her on his new work's insurance plan which we did. He got in a car accident and then was laid off, and his insurance just expired with the company (Union). Now her mother wants to put her back on hers but is asking an unreasonable amount for it (we found insurance for 50/wk, she wants 90/wk.) She took so long in asking for the extra money now we cant get it for Nov 1st and there will be a lapse in coverage. My question: Should we just give her mother the additional money she asked for until we can get the coverage in Dec? By court order, he is required to provide insurance "at a reasonable cost" Her's is NOT reasonable. What should we do?
Health Insurance - IUI /IVF coverage? We are trying to select health insurance for 2008. Both mine and my wife's employers offer health insurance. We are planning to take individual health insurances from our respective employers due to coverage and cost. We are planning to try IUI /IVF in next few months. Are these covered under mine or my wife health insurance? My wife's health insurance offers better coverage for IUI/IVF and is also more expensive. Are there any issues if we go for individual health insurance? Thanks Dave
