fara insurance - your source for insurance costs and insurance plan information

Which insurance plans & companies will help pay for lap-band surgery?

I currently have United Health Care Choice Plus, but they do not cover any sort of bariatrics surgery. I am trying to find out which insurance would cover the surgery because I am changing insurance companies in a few months and I have a few different options (I don't know what they are yet). This was on the lap-band site but it's pretty vague: Below is a partial list of insurance companies that are known to either partially or completely cover LAP-BAND® System surgery. Please note that this list should not be construed as a guarantee that you will be covered - it is provided for informational purposes only: Aetna American Family Insurance Blue Cross (in many states) Cigna First Health Health Net Humana One Health United Healthcare Any advice is appreciated!

  1. Be aware that, depending upon your state, the companies you listed only cover bariatric surgery on their group policies, not on their individual policies. Each company has a height and weight chart for individual policies and most candidates for bariatric surgery do not fall within the guidelines of the chart and so will be declined. You'll want to visit a local independent agent to see what companies your BMI will allow you to qualify for, then the agent can search those companies to see if any cover the surgery. There may be a waiting period before they'll cover. Do not give up your current coverage before getting a policy in place.
