Driving School lowers insurance costs?
I've been told that going to driving school can lower insurance costs, is this true? And if so do you have to have a certain amount of hours?

- Absolutly if you choose the right insurance company. No as long as it is a recognized program. Also if you have good grades as a student you could have cheaper rates with the right company
- It lowers it quite a bit actually
- yes and you have to go to a class in the summer for half days for about 2 weeks at a local high school
- I think it depends on two things: 1. the state you live in 2. your insurance company (#1 is more important) I know NY state does give you a discount, but how much depends on your insurance company and other things (type of car, other policies, etc.). As for hours.. that is usually defined by the driving school. They all seem to have the same amount of hours required, but it probably varies a little. The hours aren't something you can really control, though. I would call around to your insurance company and to some different schools (if there are several in the area). That should help you figure out exactly how much time you'll put in and how much benefit you'll get back. Regardless, I still think it's a good idea.
- many states allow you to go to driving school as an option that prevents you from getting points on your driving record, which indirectly reduces your insurance costs because insurance companies use the number of points on your record as a factor in your insurance rate (more points = higher rates) there is usually a minimum number of hours required for traffic school to get credit for having attended. it varies from state to state, but there is almost always a minimum. most of the time traffic school is offered as an option to avoid new points being added to your license after a moving violation, not necessarily something you can decide to do later after the points have been added. check with the traffic court in your area for more information - many cities/states have this information online.
- It does in the state of Texas. You will have to pay to go to the school. The first year you will not notice a difference, but it will be around 35 dollars a year after that.(because of the price of school)
- If you are going just for lowering your insurance then it depends on your carrier. Some give discounts for a "defensive driving course" or "advance driver training". Now if you got a ticket, then you can go to traffic school to get that point off so it does not raise your rates
