What is a PPO? Preferred Provider Organization. A medical care organization which consists of hospitals, doctors and specialists who provide their services at a reduced fee. PPOs are similar to HMOs, with the exception that care is paid for at the time of service, instead of advanced payments and fees. PPOs often allow for out of network treatment, for an additional cost to policy holders,. Visits within the network require only the payment of a small fee. There is often a deductible for out-of-network expenses and a higher co-payment. A primary doctor will be assigned who will refer the patient to a specialist if needed. After any visit, the policy holder must submit a claim, and will be reimbursed for the visit minus his/her co-payment.
