Laptop insurance has been online a long time.
It started back in the early 1980s when the first portable PCs arrived. Back then, those devices were were the size of a small suitcase.
These of course would have been very heavy to use on your lap
Even in those earliest days, a few things became clearly seen:
• certain people did not want to go to the trouble of buying their own – they were far more interested in stealing yours;
• big and heavy as they were, those early portables might be easily damaged in accidents;
• they may have had in some cases an unfortunate tendency to break down outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.
Of course, today’s laptops have improved hugely and are now powerful, slim-line and truly portable devices.
Yet in one respect, they have not changed at all from their predecessors of the 1980s – they are still potentially vulnerable to the above three risks.
That is why laptop insurance is necessary.
It may be the case that today’s laptops are, in real adjusted terms, considerably cheaper than they were in the 1980s but that is not really the point – they remain very expensive items that may cause you financial pain should you need to replace them out of your own finances.
Having laptop cover insurance helps insulate you from the risk of incurring such costs. It is sometimes referred to as being a component of what is called ‘gadget insurance’, which also provides policies to cover things such as cameras, PDAs, iphones and so on.
A good reason for having a laptop is that it is truly portable and can be taken with you wherever you go, should you so need to.
It would be a pity if you were inhibited about taking your laptop with you on various trips, simply because you were worried about what would happen should it get broken or stolen etc.
