So you’ve just maxed out your entire budget and emptied your savings accounts buying a new vehicle and the last thing you want to spend any more money on is vehicle insurance.  But on your way home from the second hand dealership with your new car it started to rain and the car in front of you slammed on its brakes and you narrowly missed driving straight into the back of it. And we all know that if you drive into the back of someone, the law says it’s your fault, no matter what the circumstances.  You cursed yourself and thanked the universe simultaneously and swore that the minute you got home you would make a few phone calls and get vehicle insurance before something else went wrong, because while you couldn’t really afford vehicle insurance, you knew that you could not afford not to have it even more.

On the positive side it is possible to structure and plan your vehicle insurance in a way that suits your needs and keeps the cost down while still providing you all the cover you need.  Insurance companies allow you to decide what aspects of insurance are most important to you and there are a lot of different types of vehicle insurance to choose from. Besides the obvious cover for theft, which is always a good idea unless you know your car has the equivalent of 24 hour armed guard protection, there are a range of possibilities. You can take out vehicle insurance for bodily injury – this will cover you against claims for injury that may come from people who are injured in an accident that have caused. There is a similar type of insurance for damage to property of other for which you are responsible, so that you are covered for damage you cause to someone else’s. car, motorbike, garden etc. You can also take out vehicle insurance specifically to cover medical costs that may be incurred by yourself or others in your vehicle.

A fourth type of vehicle insurance protects you when another negligent driver does not have enough, or any, insurance and you are then insured against major shortfalls.  Finally, for the purposes of this article, you can take out vehicle insurance any physical damage to your vehicle in one of two ways.  This can be vehicle insurance in the event of collision, in which case you will be covered for losses in terms of damages to your vehicle in the event of a collision. Secondly you can opt for comprehensive vehicle insurance, which will also cover you against most non-collision physical damage to your car, such as storm damage, broken windshields etc.

Obviously you don’t want to spend a fortune insuring your actual vehicle if it’s not worth very much, but even then you want to make sure that you are adequately covered if you damage someone else’s far more expensive vehicle. Ultimately you need to put together a vehicle insurance package that best suits you and the vehicle you drive. It may a cliché, but it really is better to be safe than sorry.
